Yesterday while watching church online, my three-year-old put her hand in mine. She kept moving it in all sorts of different directions, and eventually I looked down to admire her little hand in mine.

For those of you who don’t know, my little Joy is tiny. Like four percentile- tiny. The only thing that is not tiny on her is her hair.

But it got me thinking. Compared to her, I am BIG. She depends on me for pretty much everything. Shelter, food, clothing. She can’t even reach the faucet to get a drink of water without some sort of help. But she knows it, so she asks for help… usually. Recently she had a growth spirit, and she can now reach the door handles to open a closed door. But she used to just sit and stare at the door until someone else opens it.

She needs me. And her dad. She needs people around her to help her with her daily task. And that’s ok. We are here to help. But we can’t help if we don’t know she needs help. If she is staring at the back door waiting for someone to open it, she may be there for a while… well not in our house with 8 people… but generally speaking.

Parents are big in relationship to their child, but God is so much BIGGER compared to us!

“Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him Matthew 7:9-11).”

Our Heavenly Father, is able and willing to provide for all you need. He already knows what you need. And he will provide it. But first, you must ask. Why do you have to ask? Well, because God wants a relationship with you. He wants you to know Him. He wants you to go to Him first, not as a back-up plan.

Also, you must realize the difference between a want and a need. God is not a magical genie who just says, “Poof what do you want?”  He is a God who cares, who wants what is best for you, and who knows what is best for you.

The kids’ church lesson covered this topic. One of the activities had them partner up. The older one was to ask the younger one questions about himself/herself while the younger one was to ask for snacks. It was a pretty awesome and eye-opening activity. If you only ask for what you want without listening to the other person, nothing gets accomplished. Prayer is a two-way conversation. You have to listen and be obedient.

Wait. Be Still.

Those aren’t usually the answers I like to hear, but they are exactly what I need to hear.

Though at times it may seem like your prayers are not being answered, remember how BIG God is in comparison to you. No one likes the answer wait, but maybe waiting is exactly what you need to draw nearer to the Lord.

God is a BIG God who cares!
